YES, BUT: Un'esposizione a Milano in spazi in mutamento
Testo in Italiano (parafrasato)
English Text (paraphrased and translated)
During Milan Art Week 2026, the initiative YES, BUT will emerge as an innovative exhibition project and a dynamic format, destined to evolve in various iterations. Its purpose is to integrate with Milan's ongoing urban transformations, exploring spatial and temporal thresholds. Conceived and directed by artist Aaron Nachtailer, YES, BUT is born from a collaboration with VivirDC, a Milanese entity led by Bruno Cerella and Giancarlo Di Giuseppe, active in the regeneration and enhancement of urban spaces. The first chapter of this series will take place at SARCA183, in the Bicocca area, from April 18 to 21, 2026, with free entry upon registration.
The inaugural event is a collective exhibition featuring, in addition to Nachtailer himself, artists Florencia S. M. Brück, Morgane Tschiember, and Rocco Plessi, accompanied by a critical text by Stefano Pirovano. The presented works, including installations, sound interventions, and site-specific creations, are designed to construct an immersive and traversable environment where material, artistic gesture, and temporal dimension are configured as strictly interdependent elements. In this context, the architecture itself becomes an active component of the experience, called upon to react and transform symbiotically with the artistic creations.
The context holds crucial importance: YES, BUT is situated in buildings awaiting renovation or demolition, temporarily reactivated through contemporary artistic practices. It is precisely in this condition of suspension and transience that the project finds its deepest meaning. The title, YES, BUT – two words symmetrical in form but antithetical in their implication, an affirmative adverb and an adversative coordinating conjunction – immediately conveys this ambivalence: "yes, but," affirmation and negation, presence and disappearance, activation and transience.
The exhibition is thus placed in an intermediate space, between what still exists and what is already destined to change. This dimension reflects, in a broader perspective, the complex and stratified nature of contemporary urban landscapes, where diverse paths, imaginaries, and realities coexist and overlap. In this sense, the project aims to be a reflection on the present, understood as an intrinsically fragile and continuously reconfiguring condition. It is, therefore, a beginning that foreshadows a possible evolution of the format, conceived to adapt to heterogeneous contexts and to actively accompany the city's changes.
