TEFAF: Beyond the Fair – Four Museum Exhibitions and a Masterpiece Restoration

TEFAF Maastricht 2026 is nearing its official public opening, welcoming the general public from Saturday, March 14, to Thursday, March 19, following its preview hours. The fair brings together 276 galleries, showcasing over 7000 years of history, and attracts curators, museum directors, and collectors from around the globe, all eager to acquire and study masterpieces from every era firsthand. However, TEFAF offers far more than just art for sale.

A central initiative is the TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund (TMRF), an annual fund established in 2012 to support museums worldwide in the conservation and study of important artworks. This initiative reinforces the art community's shared commitment to preserving cultural heritage. This year, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister will benefit from TEFAF's support to restore a monumental painting by Peter Paul Rubens, The Wild Boar Hunt (1616-18). Dr. Bernd Ebert, General Director of the Dresden State Art Collections, elaborates on the painting's significance: "The special importance of Dresden's Wild Boar Hunt is evident from its previous owners. Peter Paul Rubens painted it for himself, without commission. Years later, he sold it to the Duke of Buckingham, and it subsequently became part of the imperial collection in Prague before King Augustus III acquired it for Dresden in 1749. This vital work from the Old Masters Picture Gallery requires restoration so that its high quality can be fully re-appreciated. We are immensely grateful to the TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund for its generous support."

This restoration is integral to a four-year research and exhibition program dedicated to the nearly 40 Rubens works held in Dresden, collectively known as the "Rubens Group." This collaborative project involves the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA), and the University of Antwerp (AXIS research group). Rachel Kaminsky, a member of the TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund committee, notes: "The restoration of The Wild Boar Hunt will unveil the painting's vibrant colors and Rubens' dynamic style, which masterfully juxtaposes precise details with more freely executed passages. The committee is delighted to support the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in restoring and stabilizing this masterpiece, thereby enhancing its accessibility to both national and international audiences."

Beyond the restoration project, for its 2026 edition, TEFAF has forged partnerships with four additional institutions. Each will present a thematic "loan" exhibition within the MECC venue, running concurrently with the main fair where masterworks from leading antiquarians are available for sale:

  • The Kunsthaus Zürich will present an exhibition dedicated to Alberto Giacometti, fostering a trans-generational dialogue with sculptures by Meret Oppenheim, Cy Twombly, and Rebecca Warren.
  • In anticipation of its upcoming exhibition Gerard van Honthorst: Different from Rembrandt (April 25 – September 13, 2026), the Centraal Museum Utrecht will showcase a recently acquired work, The Ecstasy of Mary Magdalene, publicly exhibited for the first time before its official museum debut.
  • The Prince Claus Fund will display works in Maastricht by artists it has supported over the past thirty years, highlighting artistic practices shaped by cultural resilience, social engagement, and global perspectives.
  • Finally, an exhibition linked to the King Baudouin Foundation will feature significant works from its collection, including Hans Memling’s Portrait of a Kneeling Member of the De Rojas Family (1460-1470), reflecting its dedication to preserving and sharing Belgian cultural heritage.

Maastricht thus reconfirms its standing as a singular opportunity for the study, research, in-depth analysis, and evaluation of art, thanks to its collection of masterpieces both available for purchase and on exhibition, all maintained at a rigorously museum-quality level.
