Art Basel Hong Kong 2026: Positive Outcomes Between International Collectors and Museums

Art Basel Hong Kong 2026 has concluded, drawing a significant international audience of 91,500 visitors. The event attracted collectors from across the Asia-Pacific region (including mainland China, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and Southeast Asia), Europe, and the United States, alongside representatives from over 170 museums and foundations spanning 27 countries. The fair reported excellent results from its opening days, marked by robust sales and overwhelmingly positive feedback from gallerists.

David Zwirner, a prominent gallerist, expressed his enthusiasm: "We are delighted to announce that the positive trend for the art world in Hong Kong continues. Opening day sales were excellent, and more importantly, we observed a high number of new collectors. A new generation is entering the Asian art market." Throughout the week, many galleries noted an increase in interregional discussions and acquisitions, involving collectors from diverse geographical areas, generations, and categories, along with a notable surge in interest from younger buyers and market newcomers.

Marc Payot, President of Hauser & Wirth, echoed this sentiment, stating: "Many of our friends – curators, artists, and collectors – from the region are in Hong Kong this week, which translated into excellent conversations and wonderful energy." He added, "At Art Basel Hong Kong, we witnessed a significant leap forward... consequently, already on the first day, we placed works by Louise Bourgeois, George Condo, Rashid Johnson, Lee Bul, Cindy Sherman, Avery Singer, Qiu Xiaofei, and Flora Yukhnovich in prestigious collections and institutions across Asia and beyond."

The general enthusiasm for Art Basel Hong Kong 2026 was palpable. Tina Kim, founder of Tina Kim Gallery (New York), declared, "Hong Kong is back! We were thrilled to place significant works by Suki Seokyeong Kang, Lee ShinJa, and Jennifer Tee with prestigious Asian institutions and foundations. Many collectors arrived from across the region, particularly an increased number of visitors from mainland China." Wendy Xu, Managing Director for Asia at White Cube, further detailed their success: "With approximately £5 million in total sales and around 20 works placed to date, the enthusiastic response to works by Antony Gormley and Tracey Emin, alongside major acquisitions of pieces by Etel Adnan, Mona Hatoum, Howardena Pindell, and Shao Fan... this momentum reinforces the strength and relevance of our program in the region."

Art Basel Hong Kong 2026 also marked the successful debut of the Zero10 section, previously known for featuring works like Beeple's robot dogs in Miami. Frederic Arnal, co-founder of Fellowship (Los Angeles) and an exhibitor in Zero10, shared a positive assessment of its Asian iteration: "We are very pleased with the number of new collectors who engaged with the sector across Asia – Singapore, Thailand, Korea, mainland China, and Japan remain strongholds... and we are in advanced discussions with collectors in Europe and the United States." He added, "It was wonderful to be back at Zero10 for its Asian debut."

Aniko Berman, Director of AOTM (New York), Zero10, confirmed, "We met new local collectors, including institutions and foundations eager to support digital art." Sales also saw positive outcomes, with Ichiko Kameyama, Director of √K Contemporary (Tokyo), Zero10, commenting, "We were thrilled to see Emi Kusano's Magical Compact sold immediately after opening." She further noted, "Presenting digital works alongside more traditional physical artworks proved extremely rewarding, as it allowed us to engage not only with collectors already familiar with digital art but also with those who typically focus on physical pieces."

Following this success, Art Basel Hong Kong 2027 has already been confirmed, scheduled to take place from March 25-27 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The next major event for Art Basel will be its flagship edition in Basel this June.
