Starfield Officially Confirmed for PS5 Release on April 7
Bethesda's highly anticipated sci-fi RPG, Starfield, has been officially confirmed for PlayStation 5, with its release scheduled for April 7. Both digital and physical editions are now available for preorder. This multiplatform debut follows persistent rumors about the game's expansion beyond Xbox exclusivity.
The PS5 iteration of Starfield will leverage the unique features of the DualSense controller. Adaptive triggers will provide varied haptic feedback based on the equipped weapon, while the light bar will dynamically display character and ship health. Players can also utilize the touchpad for seamless perspective changes and quick access to their map and hand scanner.
Consistent with its Xbox counterparts, Starfield for PS5 will be available in both a Standard and a Premium Edition. The Premium Edition offers the core game, two major story expansions – Shattered Space and Terran Armada – alongside a cosmetic skin pack, in-game currency, and a digital artbook/soundtrack. The Standard Edition is priced at $50, while the Premium Edition costs $70. Players who initially purchase the Standard Edition can later upgrade to the Premium version for $25 to gain access to all included DLC.
Starfield joins a growing list of former Xbox exclusives now available on multiple platforms, such as Avowed, Forza Horizon 5, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, and Sea of Thieves. There are even indications that a Halo title will eventually arrive on PS5. Furthermore, speculation suggests a Starfield port for the rumored Switch 2 console. Given Nintendo's upcoming system is expected to run Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, another Bethesda title, its capability to handle Starfield seems plausible.
The Terran Armada DLC will launch concurrently with a significant free update on April 7. This update, known as 'Free Lanes,' completely revamps the game's space travel mechanics. Players will gain the freedom to navigate seamlessly between planets within a star system and engage a 'cruise mode.' This mode allows for interaction with shipmates or ship customization during travel, with new points of interest emerging that players can divert to if they pique their curiosity.
The update also introduces a greater variety of space encounters. Triggering one of these will disengage cruise mode, requiring players to address the situation before resuming their journey. These encounters might involve combat or tasks such as investigating ship wreckages.
Furthermore, the free update enhances customization for weapons, gear, and ships through the introduction of X-Tech, a collectible resource. This can be used, along with standard credits, to re-roll legendary effects on weapons, offering more control over item stats.
Other notable additions in the update include a new database system, an expanded array of side quests, and two new higher-tier gear qualities: 'superior' and 'exceptional.' Players can also install an optimization terminal on their ship for enhanced customization and upgrades, access stored gear from unified outpost containers, acquire an outpost pet, and much more. A New Game+ option will also be available, allowing players to restart with all previously collected gear.
For those without the Premium Edition, the Terran Armada DLC can be purchased separately for $10. This expansion introduces a new narrative questline where players confront the Terrans, described as 'an advanced militant force with their own vision for the Settled Systems.' A Terran robot will also become available as a new companion.
A new 'Incursion' system is a core feature of the DLC, encompassing various battles central to the storyline. Bethesda detailed these as ranging from 'small skirmishes to large-scale infiltrations of Terran vessels where the objectives can vary.' Players can replay these incursions for additional loot, and gameplay options allow control over the frequency of non-story-critical incursions.
Terran Armada further enriches the game with new gear and ship components, elite crew members, pre-built outpost structures, decorative items, and more.
Starfield stands as an expansive sci-fi RPG, drawing comparisons to Mass Effect and Fallout. While its visual splendor was initially breathtaking, early impressions noted a somewhat uninspired story and gameplay. Nevertheless, the game has undergone significant post-launch enhancements. It is now considered quite strong, and anticipation is high that the 'Free Lanes' update and the Terran Armada DLC will elevate the experience even further.
