Samsung Reportedly Halts Galaxy Z TriFold Sales After Just Three Months
Samsung is reportedly set to discontinue sales of its innovative Galaxy Z TriFold in South Korea by March 17, a mere three months following its initial release. This development, first reported by the South Korean newspaper Dong-A Ilbo, awaits official confirmation from Samsung. For consumers in the United States, where the TriFold launched in January, the device will remain on sale only until current stock is depleted. This premium smartphone carries a hefty price tag, typically nearing $3,000.
From its inception, the TriFold appeared to be an experimental venture rather than a product destined for widespread production. Samsung distributed the device in limited quantities exclusively through its website, with each batch selling out rapidly, often within minutes. Reports indicate that approximately 3,000 units were sold through the initial two allocations, notably without any review units being provided to tech media outlets.
Sources within the industry, as cited by Dong-A Ilbo, suggest that the TriFold's primary purpose was to serve as a technological demonstration, showcasing Samsung's capabilities, rather than generating substantial revenue. The increasing expense of key components, such as DRAM and NAND flash memory, reportedly left little to no profit margin for the device. Interestingly, in the South Korean secondary market, the phone briefly commanded prices almost triple its original retail cost.
Despite its experimental production nature, initial hands-on impressions found the TriFold to be a robust and well-built device. This stands in contrast to the launch of the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, which faced significant delays after numerous review units provided to the press experienced critical failures within days of use.
