Nintendo Switch 2 Update Introduces 'Handheld Mode Boost' for Enhanced Legacy Game Experience
While 2026 hasn't seen a full Nintendo Direct presentation yet, the past few weeks have been busy with various Switch and Switch 2 announcements. These include the release date for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, an unexpected port of Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and the final trailer for the upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. However, for Nintendo Switch 2 owners who primarily enjoy their game library in handheld mode, Nintendo's most recent announcement is likely to be the most significant.
Nintendo has rolled out system update 22.0.0 for its latest console, delivering a range of enhancements, most notably the new 'Handheld Mode Boost' feature. Players of original Switch games without next-gen optimizations on the Switch 2 in handheld mode may have observed a blurry or less sharp appearance. This occurs because these games continue to render at 720p, which is then stretched to fit the Switch 2's larger 1080p display, resulting in a suboptimal visual experience.
The 'Handheld Mode Boost' doesn't upscale all unpatched Switch games to native 1080p on the Switch 2. Instead, it instructs these games to operate in the original Switch's docked TV mode – which supported 1080p output – while playing on the handheld device. This solution, which seemed like an evident fix since the console's launch, has finally been implemented by Nintendo after almost a year. Users can now expect improved visual clarity and, in certain situations, enhanced performance.
When activating Handheld Boost Mode for original Switch games (accessible through a system menu toggle), the Switch 2 will emulate a Pro Controller for its attached Joy-Con 2 controllers. Consequently, functionalities such as motion controls and touchscreen input will be deactivated. This limitation means certain games will not be playable with Handheld Boost Mode enabled on the new hardware. Eurogamer highlights Super Mario Maker 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD as current examples of incompatible titles.
Beyond the Handheld Mode Boost, version 22.0.0 introduces several other updates. These include a fresh animation for loading virtual game cards, new GameChat functionalities, and expanded customization options for flight mode. A comprehensive list of all patch notes is available.
