Meta is testing clickable links in Instagram captions for verified subscribers

For a long time, Instagram has restricted how users can share links, primarily limiting them to Stories, Reels, and profile bios. However, this policy appears to be evolving. Meta has initiated a test allowing clickable links directly within post captions for its Meta Verified subscribers.

This highly anticipated feature, often requested by content creators, was first noticed by blogger Andrea Valeria. She shared screenshots showing a clickable Substack link embedded in one of her Instagram posts. Valeria reported receiving an in-app notification stating she could share up to 10 links per month. Meta confirmed that it is indeed testing this functionality for Meta Verified subscribers, though specific details regarding its availability or broader rollout were not disclosed. The test seems somewhat restricted, as Valeria's link was visible on the mobile app but not on Instagram's web version.

Instagram's strict rules on link sharing have been a defining characteristic since its inception. This limitation inadvertently fostered a new industry of 'link in bio' services, such as Linktree, which enable creators to guide their audience to external websites based on their Instagram content. Should Meta widely implement this new feature, it could fundamentally alter how creators engage with their followers. However, a monthly cap of 10 links might still necessitate the continued use of 'link in bio' tools for many.

This initiative marks Meta's most recent experiment in monetizing link-sharing capabilities. The company previously explored requiring a Meta Verified subscription for creators to share links on Facebook. Meta Verified plans for creators begin at $14.99 per month, with premium tiers reaching up to $499.99 monthly.
