Meta is bringing more international news to its AI

Meta is enhancing its AI's capacity to deliver international news by forging new partnerships with global publishers. The company recently announced agreements with prominent outlets such as France's Le Figaro, Spanish media giant Prisa, and Germany's Süddeutsche Zeitung, alongside providing more details on its existing collaboration with News Corp, which operates various UK media properties. These strategic alliances are designed to equip Meta AI with improved access to current information regarding global affairs.

While specific financial terms of these new deals were not disclosed (though the News Corp arrangement was previously reported to be worth up to $50 million annually), Meta stated its intention to provide direct links to the relevant news sources. This approach aims to facilitate user access to detailed information on partner websites, simultaneously benefiting publishers by expanding their reach to new audiences.

Meta's relationship with news publishers has been complex and often strained over the years, marked by shifting priorities—from investing in live video and "instant articles" to later scaling back its focus on news content for Facebook. However, amidst intense competition in the AI landscape, Meta appears to be renewed its interest in leveraging news content. The company acknowledges that Meta AI has previously struggled with accurately and promptly answering queries, citing instances where its assistant failed to provide correct responses to seemingly simple questions.

By securing these publisher agreements, Meta aims to significantly improve its AI's ability to handle diverse queries, including more complex ones. Nevertheless, the extent to which publishers will genuinely benefit from these arrangements remains uncertain, particularly given ongoing concerns about how AI search tools might impact web traffic to original news sources.
