Netflix and Sony have officially announced a sequel for the highly successful animated film, KPop Demon Hunters. The film rights were transferred to Netflix by Sony Pictures Animation in 2021 through a broader licensing agreement. The enormous success of the movie, however, surpassed initial expectations for both companies.
The original movie holds the title of Netflix's 'most-watched movie of all time' and has earned nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards, making it a strong contender for a win.
Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who helmed the first installment, will return to direct the sequel. This project marks the inaugural endeavor under their new 'exclusive multiyear writing and directing partnership' with Netflix, specifically focused on animated productions.
Kang expressed her immense pride as a Korean filmmaker, noting the audience's desire for more from the Korean story and characters. She hinted at the vast potential of the established world, stating, "There's so much more to this world we have built, and I'm excited to show you. This is only the beginning."
Appelhans echoed this enthusiasm, describing the characters as "like family" and their world as a "second home." He conveyed excitement about developing their next chapter, pushing them further, and exploring new frontiers in combining music, animation, and storytelling.
The film's immense popularity led Netflix to deviate from its usual streaming-only strategy, granting it a theatrical release after its digital premiere. KPop Demon Hunters reportedly grossed over $19 million during its initial two-day theatrical run in August 2025, and has since returned to cinemas multiple times. This theatrical success adds to its impressive viewership of over 500 million on Netflix, making a sequel an obvious financial decision.
However, according to industry reports, the current deal structure between Netflix and Sony suggests that Netflix will be the primary, if not sole, direct beneficiary of any KPop Demon Hunters follow-up. While Sony retains the contractual rights to produce sequels or spin-offs, it reportedly will not accrue additional profits from the initial film's phenomenal success. This unique arrangement might explain why Netflix and Sony Pictures expanded their film licensing partnership in January, a deal reportedly worth over $7 billion for the streaming giant.
