Don't Miss These Playdate Games Before the Catalog's 3-Year Anniversary Sale Concludes

For those with an ever-growing Playdate wishlist, now's the perfect time to grab some of those coveted titles. Panic is hosting a special sale throughout the Playdate Catalog, commemorating its three-year milestone. While most Playdate games are already affordable, costs can quickly accumulate during an enthusiastic shopping session. This limited-time event began on March 5th and concludes on March 19th at 1 PM ET (10 AM PT), so be sure to take advantage of these savings soon.

With a staggering 423 games currently available in the Catalog, according to Panic, choosing can be overwhelming. To help you navigate this extensive selection, I've compiled a list of top recommendations.

Season Two

If the initial $39 price tag for Season Two seemed steep last summer, this sale offers an ideal opportunity to acquire it. Though Playdate's second season featured half the games of its predecessor, it presented a notably stronger and more cohesive collection. Its 12 titles are uniformly robust, showcasing diverse genres and styles, ranging from intricate puzzles and expansive adventures to quick, high-energy action games perfect for short, intense sessions. A unique bonus is Blippo+, an eccentric cable TV simulator unlike anything else available. While every game is commendable, particular highlights include The Whiteout, a post-apocalyptic journey that resonates deeply after recent winters; the engaging puzzle platformer Taria & Como; the dynamic arcade shooter Fulcrum Defender; and the charming climbing adventure, Tiny Turnip. For a more relaxed experience, I also highly recommend Dig! Dig! Dino!

Outside Parties

This game has captivated me since its release. It stands out as unique, unsettling, and utterly immersive, truly demonstrating the Playdate's capabilities. Outside Parties functions as a horror-themed scavenger hunt, where players examine a single, vast image to uncover concealed scenes. The Playdate's crank is ingeniously used to manipulate brightness, revealing details hidden in shadows. Discovering targets progressively unveils the game's narrative through spine-chilling audio clips. It offers an exceptionally cool experience with an incredible atmosphere. Players can expect numerous hours of gameplay, with more than 150 targets to locate and extensive lore to unearth.

Crankstone

Experience a complete Western adventure on your Playdate! Crankstone combines gallery shooting with interspersed mini-games, all delivered with an appealing aesthetic, engaging music, and diverse activities that make it incredibly enjoyable. Players can dive into the story mode, focusing on gunfights and protecting the town from outlaws, or visit the saloon to choose from various individual mini-games. These include rapid-fire 'spot the correct card' challenges and unique mimicry games utilizing the crank. It's akin to having a miniature Wild West theme park packed into your Playdate – truly delightful.

Echo: The Oracle's Scroll

Among my favorite Playdate games, Echo: The Oracle's Scroll offers a unique take on the Metroidvania genre by prioritizing exploration and intricate puzzle-solving over combat. Players navigate an expansive network of subterranean kingdoms in a world where a 'Blight' has driven humanity underground. You assume the role of a child tasked with delivering a crucial scroll from the deepest human settlements to The Archives above. The underground world is fraught with peril, featuring environments such as magma lakes and zones dense with hostile flora. This creates a challenging platforming experience demanding clever solutions. While the game's atmosphere is somewhat somber, charming and eccentric characters—like a frog prince with a lively demeanor—inject moments of levity, preventing the narrative from becoming overly bleak.

Carte Blanche

Classic card game enthusiasts will adore Carte Blanche. This virtual card parlor, hosted by a bird named Blanche, features six popular games: Cribbage, Gin Rummy, Spades, Cassino, and Spite & Malice. While excellent for experienced players, its clear and concise tutorials also make it an outstanding gateway for newcomers to learn these traditional games. As you win, you'll earn coins that can be spent at Blanche's slot machine, filled with her charming collection of trinkets.

Castle Kellmore

Castle Kellmore is an absolute standout. This first-person action title immerses players in a sequence of mazes, battling eerie floating-head monsters while searching for keys and discovering doors or portals to escape. It features sixteen distinct levels, and upon completion of each, a summary displays your time taken and enemy elimination percentage. The game's sound design is particularly amusing; enemies slurp and squelch, while your character offers comically indifferent vocalizations like 'Ah' or 'Ooeuugh' when healing or taking damage. A must-play for dungeon crawler aficionados!

Piña Rollada

Fans of games like Super Monkey Ball will find Piña Rollada immediately familiar: guide a rolling ball through a course, gathering all fruits before exiting. The objective is to avoid falling off and complete each level as quickly as possible. Piña Rollada cleverly utilizes the Playdate's accelerometer, allowing players to control the ball by tilting the console (though D-pad control is also an option). Levels quickly become challenging, featuring narrow paths without guardrails, various obstacles, and moving platforms. A crucial detail: simply approaching the exit will draw the ball in, so strategize fruit collection carefully to prevent premature level completion. This title offers a delightfully frustrating and highly addictive experience—be prepared for some vocal outbursts!

More Games to Explore

While these are my recent favorites, the Playdate sale offers a wealth of other fantastic titles worth discovering, such as the unique 'cheese games' and Spilled Mushrooms. For additional suggestions, consult our comprehensive list of the best Playdate games, which features acclaimed titles like Summit and Bwirds. I also intend to finally purchase several games from my own wishlist during this event, including The Shape That Waits.
