Arc Raiders Replaces AI Voice Lines with Professional Actors After Player Feedback

In a notable reversal of a growing industry trend, Embark Studios has begun replacing AI-generated voice lines in its hit game, Arc Raiders, with performances by professional human actors. This strategic pivot comes after the game's successful October launch, as confirmed by CEO Patrick Söderlund in a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz.
Söderlund candidly admitted a "quality difference," asserting that "a real professional actor is better than AI; that's just how it is." This acknowledgment underscores a growing sentiment within the gaming community regarding the nuance and emotional depth that human talent brings to character dialogue.
Despite Arc Raiders achieving significant success, boasting nearly half a million concurrent players on Steam, the initial use of text-to-speech AI for certain voice lines drew considerable player backlash. While the game did not employ generative AI for its visual assets, Embark Studios had licensed actors' voices for the text-to-speech system, reportedly for lines deemed "not as essential to the immersion of the experience."
In direct response to this widespread criticism, Embark Studios appears to be recalibrating its approach, prioritizing human voice talent. Söderlund emphasized the studio's commitment to compensating its voice actors fairly for their time in the recording booth, adding that they plan to "continue to bring many of them back as we carry on updating the game." However, Söderlund's statement that "some" AI-generated lines were replaced suggests that the studio might not be entirely abandoning its text-to-speech technology in the near future.
