Apple Unveils AirPods Max 2 with H2 Chip and Revolutionary Audio Features
Apple has officially unveiled the highly anticipated AirPods Max 2, the first significant upgrade to its premium over-ear headphones. Pre-orders are set to begin on March 25, with shipments commencing in early April.
While maintaining the iconic design featuring large, vibrant earcups and a cohesive headband, the true innovation lies within. The AirPods Max 2 incorporate the advanced H2 chip, previously seen in the AirPods Pro 2, unlocking a suite of enhanced functionalities. A standout enhancement is the significantly improved active noise cancellation (ANC). Apple states that thanks to the H2 chip and refined audio algorithms, the new AirPods Max 2 offer 1.5 times greater noise reduction capability compared to their predecessor.
Sonically, the headphones feature a new amplifier, promising clearer audio reproduction and a more immersive spatial audio experience. For audiophiles seeking lossless music, this can be achieved via the included USB-C cable connection.
The H2 chip also introduces several intelligent features. Among them is "Adaptive Audio," which dynamically adjusts between Transparency and Active Noise Cancellation modes based on your surroundings, ensuring you remain aware when necessary while still suppressing unwanted noise. Furthermore, "Conversation Awareness" automatically reduces media volume and enhances transparency when you begin speaking. Live Translation is another innovative addition, enabling real-time speech translation directly through your AirPods Max 2 and iPhone.
In essence, the AirPods Max 2 now boast nearly all the advanced functionalities present in the AirPods Pro 3, but within a premium over-ear form factor.
The pricing remains consistent, with the AirPods Max 2 retailing for $549, positioning them at a higher price point than many competitors. While the original AirPods Max delivered exceptional audio quality, their recommendation became challenging over time due to their escalating cost combined with an outdated feature set. Considering the original AirPods Max launched in 2020, this update is certainly overdue. Many feel these improvements are what should have been included in the 2024 refresh, which merely added USB-C and new colors without significant internal upgrades.
