A Deep Dive into A.D. Sui's The Iron Garden Sutra
Looking for your next captivating read? We highly recommend "The Iron Garden Sutra" by A.D. Sui, a unique blend of meditative horror, sci-fi/fantasy, and an intriguing murder mystery.
While "locked room mysteries" aren't usually my first choice, "The Iron Garden Sutra" immediately caught my attention with its compelling premise: 'a death monk and a team of researchers trapped onboard a spaceship of the dead encounter something beyond human understanding.' This setup promises a gripping murder mystery, but the novel transcends typical genre confines. Through the deep philosophical reflections of its protagonist, Vessel Iris, and an environment that naturally provokes existential thought, the narrative achieves remarkable depth.
In a distant future, Vessel Iris, a monk of the Starlit Order, is tasked with performing funeral rites to guide the souls of the deceased to their final rest. A unique aspect of his role is sharing his consciousness with an AI companion, leading to an engaging internal dialogue that often borders on playful banter, adding a charming layer to their interactions. Iris arrives at the ancient vessel, the Counsel of Nicaea, expecting to tend to long-dead occupants. Instead, he discovers a team of very-much-alive researchers and a chaotic heap of bones, disturbed from hundreds of bodies—a new challenge he must painstakingly resolve for proper blessings.
Although largely a derelict "ghost ship," the Nicaea unexpectedly thrives with lush vegetation and gardens, remnants of its former human inhabitants. Yet, a more unsettling presence emerges: Iris's AI companion detects strange signals, and soon, the research team begins to mysteriously disappear. As chaos ensues, Iris is forced to confront profound questions about his faith and ultimate purpose.
This novel proved to be an exceptional read, and I was thrilled to discover it's the inaugural installment in "The Cosmic Wheel" two-book series. Enthusiasts of horror, sci-fi, and sci-fantasy will undoubtedly find "The Iron Garden Sutra" a compelling and worthwhile experience.
