Rheinmetall CEO Sparks Outrage with 'Housewives' Drone Comparison in Ukraine

A recent statement by Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger has ignited a firestorm of international criticism and outrage, particularly within Ukraine. Papperger drew widespread condemnation after reportedly comparing Ukrainian drone manufacturers to "housewives," prompting the German defense contractor to swiftly engage in damage control.

The controversy stems from an interview published Friday in the US magazine "The Atlantic." When questioned about the advancements in drone technology in Ukraine, Papperger was quoted saying it was "like playing with Lego." He further likened significant Ukrainian drone builders to "housewives," stating, "They have 3-D printers in the kitchen, and they make drone parts. That is no innovation."

This dismissive remark provoked a sharp response from Oleksandr Kamyshin, a Ukrainian presidential advisor, who voiced his displeasure on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Kamyshin highlighted the proven effectiveness of Ukrainian drones against Russian tanks. He recounted his visits to various weapons factories, noting that he frequently observed Ukrainian women working diligently alongside men. "They are great housewives, and yet they have to work hard in the military factories," Kamyshin wrote, directly addressing Rheinmetall: "They deserve respect."

In an effort to mitigate the backlash, Rheinmetall also issued a response on X on Sunday. The company affirmed its "highest respect for the immense efforts of the Ukrainian population to defend themselves," emphasizing that "every single woman and every man in Ukraine" makes an "immeasurable contribution." Rheinmetall further stated that Ukraine's ability to fight "highly effectively, even with limited resources," was particularly commendable.

Papperger's comments quickly went viral online, leading to a deluge of memes and sarcastic allusions to the proven efficacy of Ukrainian drones under the hashtag #MadeByHousewives.

Four years into Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine has accumulated extensive experience in both deploying drones and effectively countering enemy unmanned aerial vehicles, including Iranian-designed Shahed drones. This significant expertise in drone warfare further underscored the controversial nature of Papperger's remarks and the strong reaction they provoked.
