From May 8 to 10, 2026, Ancona will host Popsophia, a festival that this year centers its focus on the theme of “Melancholia.” This multidisciplinary event, set to take place across the Teatro delle Muse, the Ridotto, and the Pinacoteca Civica Podesti, promises a unique blend of philosophy, music, cinema, and new media, reaffirming its mission to bridge popular dissemination with critical analysis.
The official presentation was held in Rome at the Chamber of Deputies, attended by prominent institutional and cultural figures. These included Federico Mollicone, President of the Culture Commission; Lucrezia Ercoli, Artistic Director; and Marta Paraventi, Ancona’s Councillor for Culture, joined by regional and European representatives.
Following its previous exploration of magic, Popsophia 2026 delves into a reflection on melancholy as a “saturnine spirit.” This perspective serves as a lens through which to examine the complexities of the present, from emerging forms of digital solitude to collective vulnerabilities.
Lucrezia Ercoli highlighted the festival’s aim to represent a journey “from the darkness of melancholy… towards the light,” exploring this emotional state as both a wellspring of creativity and a profound existential condition, drawing inspiration from Deleuze. The objective is to transform sadness into an opportunity for reflection and shared experience.
The program unfolds over three days packed with events. Afternoons at the Ridotto will feature thematic reviews such as “Philofiction,” “Mediascape,” and “Cinesophia,” analyzing popular imaginaries and the philosophical implications of artificial intelligence. Evenings at the Teatro delle Muse will showcase Popsophia’s “Philoshows,” presenting performances that fuse thought and music, under Ercoli’s artistic direction, Riccardo Minnucci’s staging, and live renditions by the Factory ensemble.
Key highlights include the inaugural show honoring Miles Davis and John Coltrane on their centennial, and the philoshow “Anima fragile,” an analysis of Vasco Rossi’s work through the lens of generational melancholy. The concluding day will feature a dialogue between Ilaria Gaspari and Lucrezia Ercoli, exploring the iconic voices of Mina and Ornella Vanoni.
The festival will also incorporate an exhibition component with “Al di là,” an immersive show at the Pinacoteca Civica Podesti. This project, developed within Popsophia’s digital meta gallery, connects permanent art collection pieces with virtual environments to explore the concept of death in the digital age. An editorial initiative in collaboration with Fogola bookstore will complement the offerings, presenting publications aligned with the festival’s theme.
