The art world mourns the passing of Christine Ruiz-Picasso, a pivotal figure in Spanish and international culture. She died on Monday, April 6, 2026, at her home in France. As the widow of Paul Ruiz-Picasso (the eldest son of the artist and Russian ballerina Olga Khokhlova), Christine dedicated a significant portion of her life to preserving and promoting her father-in-law’s legacy, thereby inextricably linking her name with the city of Málaga.

It was Christine, in fact, in the mid-1990s, who concretely and institutionally shaped the bond between Picasso and his birthplace, Málaga. Moved by the enthusiasm of the locals during temporary exhibitions at the Episcopal Palace, Ruiz-Picasso decided it was time to give Pablo a permanent “home” in the heart of Andalusia.

Together with her son, Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, Christine became the driving force behind the establishment of the Museo Picasso Málaga, inaugurated in 2003 within the magnificent Buenavista Palace. This institution was not created through a state acquisition but through an act of extraordinary generosity: an initial donation of 233 artworks that now form the core of a collection attracting 800,000 visitors annually.

As honorary president of the museum and recipient of the Grand Cross of Alfonso X the Wise, Christine Ruiz-Picasso’s dedication transformed Málaga from a port city into a prominent cultural capital. She laid the groundwork for what many now refer to as the “Picasso effect” in the region’s tourism and artistic research.

In 2023, to mark the museum’s twentieth anniversary, the institution’s auditorium was named in her honor. This tribute recognized a woman who, often preferring to remain behind the scenes, managed one of the most complex and precious artistic legacies of the 20th century with both rigor and sensitivity.

With her passing, the last great family witness who directly experienced the triumphs and challenges of the 20th-century Titan departs. However, her profound legacy lives on within the revered halls of Buenavista.
