Emmanuele Francesco Maria Emanuele, a central figure in Italian philanthropy, culture, and high finance, passed away in Rome on the night of April 15-16, 2026, at the age of 88. His departure marks the loss of one of the most recognizable—and at times controversial—personalities in Rome’s recent cultural history, often referred to, not without hyperbole, as an “eighth King of Rome.”

Born in Palermo in 1937, Emanuele hailed from one of Sicily’s most ancient noble families. He forged a career path through law, economics, and finance, establishing himself as a Supreme Court lawyer, university professor, and a globally recognized manager. However, it was in the latter half of his life that his public profile grew, with philanthropy and culture becoming the primary focus of his endeavors.

His long tenure as president of Fondazione Roma, from 1995 to 2018, followed by his role as honorary president, decisively shaped the city’s cultural scene. From Palazzo Sciarra, the foundation’s headquarters, Emanuele championed a model of intervention based on the subsidiarity between public and private sectors, drawing inspiration from the “big society” concept that was also gaining traction in European political discourse at the time. In Rome, this approach translated into intensive exhibition activities and a broad cultural investment strategy, which was sometimes perceived as overly ambitious or premature for the administrative machinery.

The most tangible evidence of this commitment is the transformation of Palazzo Sciarra and Palazzo Cipolla into significant exhibition venues, hosting shows dedicated to artists such as Andy Warhol, Edward Hopper, and Norman Rockwell, alongside projects focused on poetry, another of Emanuele’s great passions.

In addition to culture, social welfare and healthcare were also crucial pillars of his work. Among his most significant initiatives were the creation of an hospice for palliative care, designed to provide free assistance to terminally ill patients, and the Alzheimer’s Village in Bufalotta, a state-of-the-art facility for the reception and care of patients with this condition. Concurrently, through the Terzo Pilastro – Internazionale Foundation, Emanuele extended his reach beyond national borders, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean region.

A complex figure with a strong awareness of his role, Emanuele embodied a form of contemporary patronage. He liked to refer to himself as “Prof. Avv.” (Professor Lawyer), emphasizing a dual identity that combined academic knowledge with professional practice.

Among those remembering him is the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, who described him as “a refined intellectual and an authentic contemporary humanist, capable of combining knowledge and responsibility, vision and pragmatism.”
