Arizona’s Attorney General, Kris Mayes, has initiated legal proceedings against Kalshi, accusing the platform of operating an unlawful gambling enterprise within the state. The lawsuit specifically highlights Kalshi’s alleged violation of Arizona law by enabling individuals to place wagers on election outcomes. Attorney General Mayes stated, “Kalshi may position itself as a ‘prediction market,’ but its actual operations constitute an illegal gambling business and involve taking bets on Arizona elections, both of which are against state law.”
Kalshi defines its service as a prediction markets platform, where users can bet on various event outcomes, from sporting matches to political events. The company maintains that it operates under the jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and should therefore be exempt from state-level unlicensed gambling accusations.
This legal action in Arizona mirrors a similar lawsuit filed against Kalshi in Nevada just last month. Earlier this year, Kalshi also attracted media attention when an individual employed by popular YouTuber MrBeast was implicated in an insider trading scandal involving the platform.
