Apple has introduced a new system for delivering minor security updates across its iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices, dubbed “Background Security Improvements.” These updates are designed to provide lightweight, ongoing security patches for critical components such as the Safari browser, the WebKit framework, and other system libraries, filling the gaps between larger, less frequent software updates.

As the name suggests, these improvements download discreetly in the background. While a device restart is still required to finalize the installation, the process is significantly quicker than standard software updates. For instance, applying a Background Security Improvement on an iPhone typically involves a brief power cycle lasting less than a minute, a stark contrast to the 5-10 minutes a full system update often demands, minimizing device downtime.

The first of these Background Security Improvements was released today, addressing a vulnerability within WebKit. This new update mechanism is supported and enabled on devices running iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1, and macOS 26.1. Users can review further details concerning these security enhancements within the “Privacy & Security” section of their device’s Settings menu.
