The second theme delves into the intrinsic poetics of the artworks and Griffa’s artistic exploration, focusing on the concept of the imprint, the trace. The 1969 exhibition at Sperone’s gallery marked the artist’s initial experiments with unframed canvases, using raw surfaces. These canvases bear the marks of fingerprints, sponges, or brushstrokes. Here, the painterly stroke becomes the sole protagonist, positioning the art on the boundary between thought, conceptual work, and traditional artistic expression (involving canvas, the use of color, and so forth). Amidst the fervor of conceptual and Arte Povera movements, Griffa’s approach represented a distinctly personal and thus ingenious artistic quest.

This distinctiveness and genius remain vibrant in the lively works from 2026 featured in the ongoing exhibition. Alongside these artworks, recent photographs, also by Mussat Sartor, taken at the Foundation, are displayed.

However, the Summer 69 exhibition is just one part of the celebrations for Griffa’s 90th birthday. On March 26th, a dedicated monographic room in his honor opened at the Castello di Rivoli. This space, curated in collaboration with the CRRI – Castello di Rivoli Research Centre, showcases the artist’s works in dialogue with historical photographs by Paolo Pellion. Additionally, the GAM – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea of Turin will present its own room dedicated to the artist, opening on May 9th.

The tributes continue. The MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome has recently enhanced its public collection with the acquisition of six monumental works by the artist. Furthermore, from June to October of this year, the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, will host a retrospective of his work. This exhibition, curated by Robert Wiesenberger and realized in collaboration with the Edward and Maureen Fennessy Bousa Fund for Contemporary Projects, with support from the American Academy, will be titled Giorgio Griffa: Paths in the Forest. It will comprise approximately twenty monumental works and will be accompanied by a catalogue. This project was the winning entry for the Italian Council grant – 14th edition, promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.

And the celebrations do not end there. The 90th birthday commemorations for Giorgio Griffa are launching a new initiative by his own Foundation: a membership program open to the public, aimed at promoting the artistic and cultural heritage embodied by the great artist’s work at every level.
