2023 COUNTDOWN
Welcome to the 2023 Mod of the Year results! With top 100 voting having taken place over the last 20 days, the results have now been tallied and we are ready to announce the winners! Our favorite moments in 2023 include our sister company mod.io announcing offical integrated mod and UGC support in games from top publishers including Ubisoft, Techland and Bandai Namco a clear signal that modding is getting bigger and becoming better supported than ever before.
Below you will find the Top 10 Mods of 2023. While you're at it, you can also check out the Top 10 Indie Games of 2023, or join the site in anticipation for next year's awards to register a mod of your own or vote for those you think deserve recognition in 2023.
Battlefield 1918 is a total conversion modification for Battlefield 1942. The mod takes Battlefield 1942 into a whole new scenario, the first world war. Next to historically correct equipments and vehicles, we try to recreate the atmosphere of these WW1 battlefields as close as we can, keeping in mind the game we're working with. To achieve this, we've drastically changed the gameplay from the original game like so that you must now rely on teamwork, artillery, trenches and slow vehicles....
Voxel Doom II is the follow up to 2022's award-winning Voxel Doom. This is a new graphics mod that replaces all monsters, weapons, props and items with fully 3d voxel models. It replaces all monsters from both Doom and Doom II.
Lost in Infinity's grasp, the Doom Slayer must break an endless cycle of death and rebirth. Classic Doom transformed into a roguelike along with upgrades, stats and random surprises!
Equestria at War is a mod that tries to recreate the fantasy world of Equestria from My Little Pony franchise in a slightly darker setting with industrialization, corruption and political disagreements. The scenario focuses on global confrontation between Changelings and Equestria.
Dark Interval is a restoration/revision mod that lets you play Half-Life 2 as it could have been. Using Valve's early concepts, we're creating new maps, models, textures, and custom dialogue. The mod is released in episodes, the most recent being Dark Interval: Part I - an intro chapter to the bigger story.
Swelter is a story-driven mod set several years before the events of Half-Life 2. It explores the internal tensions within the Resistance during their rebellion against the Combine in a post-Soviet Central Asian city, encircled by the scorching steppe.
The easiest to use and most flexible NoVR mod for Half-Life: Alyx! This mod allows you to play Half-Life: Alyx without a VR headset, not needing specialized drivers or anything like that. It allows you to play the game in any way and anywhere you like from beginning to end! We developed the only NoVR mod that allows you to play in a very easy way, with many VR interactions preserved in some form for a flat screen.
Run. Think. Shoot. Live. Yet Again. Replay your old favorite game with new features like enhaced effects, movement, weapons.
The team behind Entropy : Zero - Uprising placed first in last year's Best Upcoming, and this year made good on that hype with a fantastic release that nabbed them another great placement in Mod of the Year, as a fan-made spin-off mod of last year's Player's Choice winner, Entropy : Zero 2. This time you step in the boots of a Civil Protection Unit trapped right in the middle of the uprising.
It's funny to say this mod came out of nowhere, considering it has been in development for 7 years, but Thief: The Black Parade did just that when it released in November this year. It has captivated fans of the original Thief, serving as an unofficial expansion for Thief Gold in which players assume the role of Hume, a returning convict, as he is inadvertently thrown into a web of intrigue and conspiracies. The year is 833, you are now back in The City, a sprawling metropolis of soot-caked brick, greasy fumes and noisy machinery, with many a sinister conspiracy whispered behind closed doors. Lost and without a penny to your name, you are back to your life of thievery and must find your old associate Dahlquist. Shadows and silence are your allies. Light is your enemy. Stealth and cunning are your tools. And the riches of others are yours for the taking.
One of the rare mods able to bring a ton of nostaglia back, over 25 years on from the series original release.

I am excite!
I cross my fingers for ASHES 2063!
Congrats to EZU and Swelter. I was rooting for you the most.
Ah hell, what? :o Congrats to all projects being highlighted here! You did a marvelous job, keep it up!
An amazing mod for an amazing game at first place. Very fitting. Good job everyone. Keep up the great work you do.
Kinda disappointing that Carnivores Legacy didn't get an honorable mention here. :<
With that said though congratulations to everyone here! ^,^
How is EZ:U above Swelter???
I feel like Swelter wasn't really actively encouraging voting, other than going by word of mouth. Whereas EZU is enjoying a bit more presence, for example EZ2 Steam Page had an announcement to go vote for EZU.
They both deserve MOTY in my eyes, of course there can only be one, EZU got as high as it could because The Black Parade had a rather big call to vote from Mandalore, Swelter got as high as it got without any real voting 'campaign'.
Woo! Congrats to all the top mods this year!
Gotta do some big projects in The Dark Mod next year to get back into the contest
Congrats to Thief The Black Parade team for a job extremely well done!!! Huzzah!!!
Dark interval I cannot believe it went here! great contest.
Thief The Black Parade
Congrat’s to all HL stuff,
And more congrat’s to THIEF The Black Parade, Garrett has also his 25 year anniversary but he still isn’t forgotten !
Beware the dawn of the Metal Age *du dum*
Tis not the time, for now what looms is a Dark Project
All great mods all around, congrats to everyone on the successful releases.
Congratulations to all the mods who participated!
Thank god I'm alive to see BF1918 enter the Moddb top 10. Finally one of the best mods ever made for BF42 finally got the recognition it deserved.
This is perhaps the best 'thank you' we could give to the team that revived the mod a few years ago.
Pleased to see RTBR in the honorable mentions! Congrats to all other winners.
Congrats to The Black Parade. Well deserved indeed.
I am surprised Brutal Doom made it onto any kind of list, that mod has been dormant for years now. Still, congrats to everyone else! Black Parade indeed came out of nowhere, will have to check that out!
Thank you to everyone who voted for Half-Life Alyx NoVR taking us to the 4th position!
Almost everyone on the NoVR team are new to modding and game development. So we cannot be any more thankful for the amazing response.
We just published a year in review article and previews of things to come!
Happy New Year! Peace and Love!
